Terrestrial Vegetation Dynamics and Global Climate Controls in North America: 2001–05

چکیده
Monthly composite data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite sensor was used to reconstruct vegetation dynamics in response to climate patterns over the period 2001–05 for North America. Results imply that plant growth over extensive land areas were closely coupled to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) effects on regional climate. Areas strongly tied to recent (2002–03) ENSO climate effects were located mainly in northwestern Canada, interior Alaska, the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States, and throughout northern Mexico. Localized variations in precipitation were detected as the predominant controllers of * Corresponding author address: Christopher Potter, NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett

Global change and terrestrial plant community dynamics.
Anthropogenic drivers of global change include rising atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses and resulting changes in the climate, as well as nitrogen deposition, biotic invasions, altered disturbance regimes, and land-use change. Predicting the effects of global change on terrestrial plant communities is crucial because of the ecosystem services vegetation pro...
متن کاملCoupled Terrestrial Carbon and Water Dynamics in Terrestrial Ecosystems: Contributions of Remote Sensing
The Earth climate is a complex, interactive system, determined by a number of complex connected physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in the atmosphere, land and ocean. The terrestrial biosphere plays many pivotal roles in the coupled Earth system providing both positive and negative feedbacks to climate change (Treut et al., 2007). Terrestrial vegetation via photosynthesis conv...
متن کاملCarbon residence time dominates uncertainty in terrestrial vegetation responses to future climate and atmospheric CO2.
Future climate change and increasing atmospheric CO2 are expected to cause major changes in vegetation structure and function over large fractions of the global land surface. Seven global vegetation models are used to analyze possible responses to future climate simulated by a range of general circulation models run under all four representative concentration pathway scenarios of changing conce...
متن کامل17. Vegetation and Climate of the Northwest Coast of North America during the Last 500 K.y.: High-resolution Pollen Evidence from the Northern California Margin
Pollen analyses of sediments from Holes 1019C, 1019E, 1020C, and 1020D as well as piston Core EW9504-17 provide continuous, chronostratigraphically controlled proxy vegetation and climate data for coastal northwest North America for the last ~500 k.y. Systematic changes in the representation of the diagnostic components of northern California plant assemblages clearly show orbital-scale variati...
متن کاملVulnerability of carbon storage in North American boreal forests to wildfires during the 21st century
The boreal forest contains large reserves of carbon. Across this region, wildfires influence the temporal and spatial dynamics of carbon storage. In this study, we estimate fire emissions and changes in carbon storage for boreal North America over the 21st century. We use a gridded data set developed with a multivariate adaptive regression spline approach to determine how area burned varies eac...
